According to Xiaomi’s most recent promotional materials for the Xiaomi 15, they unveiled that Qualcomm will break the traditionalist integrative chipset naming series. Well, the expected Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 is expected instead to become the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Elite. This renaming is far more in line with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X Elite, which is at present used in some high-performing Windows notebooks.
Traditionally, Qualcomm has been following the chronological nomenclature system for its chipsets, which in turn helped consumers understand the upgrades and versions much easier. These two models dominated Xiaomi’s production in recent months, but the teaser for the Xiaomi 15 launch event suggests a change of approach. Qualcomm seems to be shifting toward a branded method instead, and the ‘Elite’ prefix is used to highlight that those are the premium chips from Qualcomm.
The new chipset known as Snapdragon 8 Elite, which Qualcomm claims to be its first 3nm SoC, is expected to deliver major upgrades in efficiency and performance. This chip is also expected to be officially announced sometime before the Xiaomi 15 is released on October 23. It is noteworthy that only the marketing messages for the Xiaomi 15 stress the new number-naming tradition, which reflects its significance.
Amid presale promotion, there are rumors of a possibly inferior version of the chipset, called Snapdragon 8 Plus. Such distinctions indicate that there is a need for Qualcomm to have various and different chip sets to meet different performance qualifications and client bases.
Even as the notable naming strategy brings forth its dividends, there is a possibility of consumer confusion. Moving away from a simple, sequential format to one that introduces nuance in its naming may make it more difficult for the average consumer to recognize and compare various products. Qualcomm does seem to be prepared to tackle such issues by segregating its product lines distinctly, tagging high-end ones as “Elite” and more mainstream ones with a “Plus” tag.
Moreover, rumors are still active that the next Samsung cellular model—the Galaxy S25—may include a various version of this new chipset, which indicates that Qualcomm’s fresh scheme has important consequences for the entire product segment of smartphones. While further changes are anticipated in the future with the official announcement next month, the tech community has closely analyzed how the above changes can affect the nature of the future mobile technology.
