Samsung is considering eliminating the digitizer in its upcoming Galaxy Z Fold 7 to make the device slimmer while still supporting pen input. The company is looking into a static electricity-based pen input technology, similar to Apple’s Apple Pencil, which would replace the traditional Electromagnetic Resonance (EMR) technology used in previous models like the Fold 3 and Fold 6.
Samsung is hoping to slim down the device by removing the digitizer. While the Galaxy Z Fold SE showed this, it wasn’t implemented with pen input support. With the Apple Pen, having an Active Electrostatic (AES) technology seems to require making the pen thicker and that is simply not an option when it comes to the S Pen as it does not add anything to the display area.
This innovation could make foldable devices both thinner and more functional, helping Samsung stay competitive. Additionally, the company plans to use titanium for the Galaxy Z Fold 7’s backplate, further enhancing durability. As Samsung moves forward with this development, the changes could set a new benchmark for future foldable phones.
