The first of the foldable devices is the iPhone Flip—a clamshell style, similar to Samsung’s Galaxy Z Flip. This decision seems intentional, given that a design in the clamshell format would be rather popular among consumers in search of a portable all-in-one device. Both parts of the iPhone Flip when opened will be similar in size to a normal iPhone, and the uniqueness is only in the fact that it will be flipping open.
In the meantime, the iPad/Mac splits the difference and tries to change what we expect of tablets and laptops. Sporting a 20.3-inch internal display when unfolded, this is productivity and entertainment all in one device. It’s powered by the next-gen M5 chip, indicating that Apple is serious about providing a powerful computing experience in a flexible form factor.
One of the biggest challenges with foldable devices is the durability of the displays. Apple, known for its meticulous attention to quality, has reportedly signed a contract with Samsung to supply foldable displays. These displays are expected to incorporate technology from a recent Apple patent titled “Electronic Devices with Durable Folding Displays.” This patent describes a display with thicker corners and edges, designed to enhance durability where it matters most.

Apple’s conservative estimate can be attributed to its focus on providing a quality product. Another indication of a deliberate strategy is the fact that the foldable iPad/Mac hybrid is set to be released before the iPhone Flip; this gives Samsung enough time to manufacture enough foldable displays.
The mobile foldable market is in a state of emergence where different key vendors, including Samsung, Motorola, and Chinese brands Vivo and Xiaomi, compete fiercely. It will compete with the Galaxy Z Flip 8, Motorola Razr 2026, Vivo X Flip, and Xiaomi Mix Flip by 2026. However, Apple’s reputation for innovation and quality could give it a unique edge, especially if it can deliver on the promise of a durable and user-friendly foldable experience.
Apple’s entry into the foldable device market marks a significant shift in its product strategy. The iPhone Flip and iPad/Mac hybrid are not just about keeping up with competitors; they represent Apple’s vision of the future of mobile computing. With a focus on durability, powerful hardware, and innovative design, these devices could set new standards in the industry.
