Apple has now launched iOS 18, which has integrated Rich Communication Services (RCS) to improve messaging between iPhones and Androids. It is believed that this update will enhance communication issues that have been quite prevalent between these operating systems for users and gain a more user-friendly interface.
RCS is a messaging protocol that extends basic SMS with advanced features. That means typing indicators, delivery and reading receipts, high-resolution photo and video support, and the possibility to send messages via Wi-Fi or mobile data. Users are also able to control group chats by being able to edit members in the room and leave conversations. These features practically make messaging more similar to the experiences of contemporary apps like WhatsApp or iMessage.

However, one drawback of using RCS is that E2EE is not implemented in RCS connections across platforms. As of the moment, this iPhone-to-Android messaging does not support E2EE, and users are getting worried about the safety of their messages. Apple recognizes this limitation and is planning to have future protection features such as encryption of messages across different platforms.
Apple has taken the time to put out a statement more to the effect that iPhone consumers cannot do anything to enable or turn on RCS. After the iOS 18 update, if both participants support it, Aisns will transition from SMS to RCS. This transition has the potential to produce improved communication that can be achieved without further configuration by the users.

Google, which has been incorporating the RCS feature in the Google Messages app for so long, also welcomed the development. The company released a campaign to market the new compatibility, and they gave further indications that they can be aspiring to future enhancements, including reactions and direct replies in a group conversation.
RCS has the backing of most premier US carriers, such as AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon, but other carriers and MVNOs, for example, Google Fi, are still waiting for Apple to enable the iPhone’s support for RCS. As people continue to upgrade their iPhones, Apple should hope that with the iOS 18 release, messaging will become much better for millions of users.
