Huawei is making a comeback in the smartphone market despite facing U.S. sanctions and limited access to advanced chip technology. After being placed on the U.S. entity list in 2019, Huawei lost access to Google services and cutting-edge 5G chips. In response, it developed its own operating system, HarmonyOS, and created the Kirin 9000s chipset.
The August 2023 launch of the Mate 60 series, powered by the Kirin 9000s, marked a significant step for Huawei, despite the chipset being two generations behind its rivals. The company is focusing on regional markets, particularly China, and plans to expand into over 60 countries.
However, Huawei’s growth is limited by its inability to manufacture 3nm chips, which affects performance compared to competitors. Despite these challenges, Huawei’s innovation and expanding ecosystem continue to fuel its recovery in markets that support its phones.
Huawei’s efforts show that, even with obstacles, strategic innovation can drive success in the competitive smartphone industry.
