Huawei launched the Huawei Mate XT Ultimate Design two days ago as the world’s first tri-fold smartphone, taking a step further in smartphone innovation. Huawei is the only brand that has launched a tri-fold phone, highlighting Huawei’s technical prowess and penchant to innovate in mobile engineering.
That becomes even more evident when compared to Samsung’s rumored Galaxy Z Fold 6. When folded, the Mate XT is 12.8mm thick, and the Galaxy Z Fold 6 is a little slimmer at 12.1mm. That’s just 0.7mm thicker than it already was, which is remarkable given the Mate XT’s tri-fold design—even if you aren’t one for foldables in their current form. A Reddit image comparing the two units seems to drive home this point, further solidifying the perception from consumers that Huawei is “ahead of the curve in innovation”.

The Mate XT utilizes a dual hinge mechanism that means it folds in three places; each segment, when fully unfolded, is just 4.57 mm thick, according to the company. In contrast, the Galaxy Z Fold 6 is as thin as a section of 5.6 mm. When fully open, this clamshell puts a 10.2-inch from top to bottom display with a 3K resolution and an aspect ratio of 16:11 to deliver what Huawei is calling “multifold options” for apps on a highly immersive screen area. It folds once to 7.9 inches, while fully folded it measures at 6.4 inches, giving users a choice of screen sizes for different use cases ranging from multimedia consumption to carrying the device around in their pockets.
The Mate XT is, as one would expect, a bit of a beast Sitting beneath the hood is Huawei’s top-of-the-range Kirin 9010 chip and up to 16GB of RAM—more than enough processing muscle to keep those apps running without missing a beat. Providing power is the job of that whopping great 5,600mAh battery. The variable aperture camera setup lends it an added charm, with the cameras delivering great photography in diverse lighting conditions.
The Huawei Mate XT has been unveiled in China but is also teased from the global social media accounts of Huawei. A worldwide launch could help give Huawei a competitive edge in the foldable smartphone market, which Samsung continues to dominate with its Galaxy Z Fold series.
