Huawei has reached a significant milestone in its push for technological self-reliance. The company’s new Mate 70 series smartphones are equipped with 100% China-made chips, a major step forward for the country’s semiconductor industry. This announcement, made by Huawei Chairman Yu Chengdong, highlights the company’s progress despite ongoing geopolitical challenges.
According to Huawei Central, Yu shared at a recent event at Baoan Middle School that the Huawei Mate 70 series no longer relies on foreign-based System on Chips (SoCs). Instead, they feature the new Kirin 9020 processor, which brings a 40% improvement in performance and 20% better power efficiency compared to its predecessor. Yu also noted that all processors used in the Mate 70 series, excluding the standard model, are produced entirely within China.
The Kirin 9020 has achieved impressive performance, scoring 1.25 million points on AnTuTu, marking a 30% increase over its predecessor. It also boasts the industry’s first 5G-A satellite communication modules, further demonstrating the advancements in Huawei’s chip development. In addition, the Mate 70 series includes an upgraded GPU, the Maleoon 920, which is expected to enhance gaming and graphics performance.
This has come after tough times experienced by Huawei following the U.S. sanctions in 2019 that blocked the development of Kirin chipsets. But when it introduced the Mate 60 series last year, Huawei revived the self-developed chip research and enhancement process and has strengthened it since.
Huawei’s decision to equip its devices with fully domestic chipsets completely frees China from using foreign technologies and hence could mark the start of a new era in the technology world. It could be used to avoid dependency on US technology, assisting the way towards more autarkist innovations in the future.
