Apple is finally adding dedicated VR controller support to its Vision Pro headset, addressing one of the device’s most significant drawbacks. Initially launched without controllers in February, the Vision Pro relied solely on hand and eye tracking for navigation—an ambitious but incomplete approach. Now, thanks to a new partnership with Sony, Apple is taking a major step toward enhancing the headset’s gaming capabilities and overall user experience.
According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple reached out to Sony months ago to integrate the PSVR2 controllers into the Vision Pro. This move comes as a direct response to the headset’s struggles, including weak sales that have reportedly fallen below half a million units, far less than Apple’s expectations. The lack of controller support made it difficult to play many of the top VR games, and the high price tag didn’t help attract a broad user base.
With the new Sony partnership, the Vision Pro will soon support the PSVR2 controllers, which will likely be sold separately on Apple’s website. These controllers will not only enhance the gaming experience but also improve navigation within visionOS, the operating system that powers the headset. While the Vision Pro’s eye and hand tracking are impressive, they still fall short in certain situations, and the PSVR2 controllers should fill this gap.
However, challenges remain. While the Vision Pro is powered by the capable M2 chip, battery life is expected to be a concern, especially for gaming. Gamers will likely need to keep the headset plugged in for extended play. Despite these issues, the introduction of VR controller support is a positive change, one that could make future Vision Pro models—hopefully at a lower price—much more appealing.
Apple’s decision to address this glaring oversight shows that they are listening to feedback. With this update, the Vision Pro could finally live up to its potential.
