In a surprising turn of events, Sony has let us know it will not release its Xperia 5 VI to retail this year. The tech giant that typically releases two flagship models annually has confirmed the cancellation in a press conference, marking somewhat departure from its usual product release strategy.
The Xperia 5 VI was rumored to launch in either 2024 or possibly as early as late this year, but now Sony has decided against releasing the device. The big question now is not whether the Xpera will be delayed into 2025 or even canceled.
Rather than unveiling a brand new model, Sony will be sprucing up its current roster with the ageing Xperia 5 V as provides a smaller device in an audience that grows ever more slim. It makes sense and speaks towards a wider industry trend of waning consumer appetite for compact phones. And the Xperia 5 series, with its now modest-for-2021 6.1-inch display has lost much of whatever allure it held for users who once prized Sony’s compact devices.

Xperia 5 users may have instead moved to Xperia 1 series, which order a larger screen and less compromise on hardware quality. And with the Xperia 1 series (and its larger display) packing similar internals, volume has reportedly been more promising as users seem to be option for devices that prioritize screen real estate.
Sony has for now not commented on its plans next-gen Xperia 5 series. If users continue to favor large phones and the need for compact devices has waned, who knows what will happen with the Xperia 5 line. What will Sony do about the Property, only time will tell.
