Huawei is about to change the smartphone market by launching a commercial folding screen product—the Huawei Mate X1, which was officially released on September 10 and claims the title of “the world’s first commercially available tri-fold folding flexible full-screen phone.” Given that over 2.3 million reservations are already on the books for this thing, it’s safe to say the Mate XT is easily one of those potential world-changing technological leaps you hear about in other news outlets. Meanwhile, sales will commence on September 19 to remind us of how ravenous the public is for new-age designs.
Out of all the folding phones we’ve seen so far, though it’s worth mentioning that there haven’t been many more than two or three such handsets to date now, this definitely looks like one with some real power. The 16GB of RAM on board will benefit heavy users or media consumers with options to select from, including a choice between either 512GB and the larger ratio size within the capacity of 1TB. It is also available in a neat red or classic black finish, encouraging users to make it their personal cutting-edge device.
That said, reservations are one thing and actual sales another. Of these early sales, analysts expect 1 million units, or about a 50% conversion. The excitement is telling on both the high level of demand ready for next-gen and whether that will translate into actual final purchase commitments.

The smartphone industry could be in for a significant shakeup with the tri-fold design. The engineering feat that Huawei has pulled off with the Mate X will certainly have competitors watching very, very closely. The complexity of the design reinforces that technical challenge and is likely to be both why Dyson will want a premium price point for it but also keep stock relatively limited to begin with. However, without a doubt, these are less produced due to the more complex production processes required for putting together such an advanced device.
Many hardware specifications are still well and truly under wraps, which might suggest that Huawei is being strategic in keeping some details out of the announcement to keep interest alive leading up until release. This could be a major boost to keep the momentum going until we actually see what the Mate XT can do when it comes time for its full capabilities and features.
The Huawei Mate XT is a testament to the future of mobile devices, both in terms of technology and how companies approach new markets—this isn’t merely a product launch; it’s setting an example that most other manufacturers could learn from when launching their own products, moving competitive space.
